Habitat

They are birds of the Arctic Tundra or open grasslands and fields. They rarely venture into forested areas, instead appearing along lakesides, marine coastlines and marshlands if they do move further south..

  • The snowy owl is virtually silent except during the breeding season.
  • The females are larger than the males.
  • During hot weather they spread their wings and pant.
  • They live for up to 10 years in the wild but can live until they are 35 in captivity.
Biological Characteristics

The snowy owl is a large white diurnal owl that has a rounded head with yellow eyes and a black bill. The males are almost pure white whilst the females are barred black and white. Snowy owls have heavily feathered feet.
